ILLUSTRATION & VISUAL NARRATIVE - Exercise 1 & 2
24/3/2022- 30/4/2022 / Week 1 - Week 5
During the tutorial we were given a exercise based on chiaroscuro. We were given a picture and to illustrate that. Mr. Hafiz showed step by step on how to do it.
This is the scene from Goku that served as an inspiration for me. Even if it isn't exactly like Goku, the character that I developed had a similar appearance to him in my mind. Aside from that, before I went to improve my character, I asked feedback from Ms. Anis to make sure what she thinks of my character.

Lectures
Week 1
During week 1 of class, we were introduced to Ms. Anis and Mr. Hafiz. They went through the content of the module as well as the assignments that will be expected in this module. This includes building our very own monster character, producing a looping gif, designing a Webtoon comic, and turning the Webtoon comic into a motion graphic novel. We were also shown examples of previous projects completed by our seniors. Creating a unique story requires a wide range of intellectual concepts, all of which I intend to expand as I learn how to fully utilize the software. We were also asked to play The Bezier Game for us to get a better grasp on Adobe Illustrator and also to learn how to use the pen tools.
Week 2
Over the course of this week, Mr. Hafiz thought about how to use the AI and
also gave us a tutorial on how to trace with pen tools in Illustrator. He also
asked us to practice with the pen tool whenever we had free time so that we
could become proficient with it. Mrs. Anis then took the stage for the second
session. She continued with our lecture class on character design principles
and also assigned us a homework in which we were expected to create a lecture
report on a visual study based on an animated character based on the character
design principles. It must be written in 300 words. Not only that, but she
also gave us an overview of the assignment as well as the regulations for the
Vormator challenge. She informed us that we would be given a set of shapes and
that we would be required to create the character solely from the shapes that
were provided to us.

Week 3
This week, Mr. Hafiz showed us how to use the shape builder tool and also taught us how to add and subtract the shapes that were given. He also showed us a tutorial and introduced us to the pathfinder, which allows us to combine and merge the shapes. Pathfinder not only does that, it has so many things it can do.
Later that day, Mr. Anis took over the class to teach us about Chiaroscuro. She told us the purpose of it and why it is so important for a scene. She also gave us a report on to analyze it.

Week 4
Composition Theory 1_Visual Types and Shots
Mr Hafiz thought on how to sketch parts with AI on a chiaroscuro
exercise in this week class. He guided us step by step on how to do it
and showed us variety of ways sketching it.

Then Mr. Anis gave us a lecture on composition theory 1. It was very informative since I learned the four basic composition visual rules and six different types of shots. After she was done with the lecture, she gave us our next task, which was our Lecture Report 3. We were instructed to take or choose an existing picture based on the 6 different types of shots.

Instructions
Exercise 1 : Vormator Challenge
In our Vormator Challenge work, we were required to construct a character out of the limited shapes that were provided to us. I began by looking for inspiration on Pinterest, since I wanted to come up with more original ideas to get my project off the ground as soon as possible. Following that, I attempted to mix the shapes to create characters, despite the fact that I was unsure of what I intended to create. To be completely honest, it was quite difficult for me to develop the character since I believed my imagination was limited; nonetheless, I took advantage of the opportunity to put my abilities to the test with the Vormator Challenge.

Figure 2.1 Try outs |
So these were the characters that I came up with, but I didn't particularly like for them because I thought I could have done a better job with them.
Figure 2.2 Character that I liked |
However, I made the decision to go with this one. Because it resembled the sun deity and also reminded me of a scenario from Goku's origin story. That gave me a vague sense of what I needed to accomplish next and how I should proceed from that point.
Figure 2.3 Goku Scene |
This is the scene from Goku that served as an inspiration for me. Even if it isn't exactly like Goku, the character that I developed had a similar appearance to him in my mind. Aside from that, before I went to improve my character, I asked feedback from Ms. Anis to make sure what she thinks of my character.
Feedback :
She provided me with feedback, stating that the legs appeared unappealing. She also provided suggestions on how I could improve my character. She also told me to explore alternatives too.Figure 2.4 Feedback that was given by Ms Anis |
Figure 2.5 Revised Version |
According to the feedback that was given to me, I fixed my character. To be honest, it looks good and I was actually very satisfied with my character. But I wasn't a big fan of the facial expression of my character, so I asked Mr. Anis for feedback to improve my character.
Feedback :
Ms. Anis gave feedback telling us to change the facial expressions, which was very expected because I didn't like them either.Figure 2.6 Face Expressions |
So, I explored various kinds of facial expressions while also trying to get inspiration from Pinterest. I would say getting suitable facial expressions for my character wasn't an easy task. It was extremely challenging and did make me squeeze my brain. But I actually chose the second one, because I thought it will be suitable for my character.
Figure 2.6 Changes in facial expression |
I wasn't very satisfied with the facial expression. because it didn't really suit what I actually thought of doing. So, I changed the facial expression and I loved it. The facial expression matched my character. The fear in the eyes and the expression are what I wanted in my character.
Not only that, I gave my character a name, which is 'Aqua Blaze', because of what it purely looks like and also because it has a tail. So to make sense, I added the aqua. Not only that, Aqua Blaze has the power to shoot everyone with his fireball, and I wanted my character to be very bold to show that no one can mess around with him.

Exercise 2 : Vector Illustration (Play Card)
For this exercise, we were instructed to design a play card, and we're not limited to using the shapes that were given. We are free to use anything to illustrate. I had an idea for a sketch for my play card based on my character AQUA BLAZE.I wanted my background to be dramatic, as if something serious was happening in that scene while he's trying to throw his fireball at someone.
Figure 3.0 Background for the play card |
Figure 3.1 Play Card (First Try) |
So I tried placing my character on the background that I designed to see what it looked like. It was actually quite nice, but something was distracting me, and I knew something was wrong.
Feedback :
Ms. Anis told me it was a good game, but the building was the Centre of attention, so she asked me to change the line of the building to something lighter shade so that the character would be the Centre of attention. Not only that, but she suggested that my character's placement be improved by moving her to the right side.
So I made changes according to what Ms. Anis said, and I was actually in love with my play card. The design was very cohesive with the character that I built.
