Lectures

Week 6

In this week we were introduce on foreground, middle ground and background and also on different composition.

  • FOREGROUND - Objects that are nearest to the viewer
  • MIDDLE-GROUND - Objects in between foreground and background
  • BACKGROUND - Objects that are the furthest away from the viewer

After the lecture class, Mr. Hafiz taught us about colour basics as our tutorial. We were advised to follow him so that we could expand our knowledge of Illustrator. In this tutorial, he covered the line tool.

  • effect\distort\zig zag
  • warp tool
  • outline stroke
  • expand
  • expand appearances
  • pathfinder merge
  • isolation mode
  • blob tool
  • draw behind
  • draw inside

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2: DECISIVE MOMENT

Before getting started on the assignment, I performed some study on the design of minimalist movie posters and researched how the posters convert the film into simple art. In order to locate the origin of the light, I observed that the essential components are typically represented as lines, silhouettes, basic text, or shadows. This allowed me to determine the location of the light source. As a result of looking at these examples, I now have a general concept of how I want my poster to look.

As a fantasy adventure film, Alice in Wonderland caught my eye because of its intriguing plot and characters. This is the story of a little girl's first trip to the enchanted Underland. Teenage Alice Kingsleigh (Wasikowska) has no recollection of her childhood home save for her dreams. When she spies a white rabbit at a garden party for her fiance and herself, she falls through a hole after him. Her life takes a turn for the unexpected. With her old companions the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), Cheshire Cat (Helena Bonham Carter), and others, Alice is reunited with her destiny: to bring a stop to the Red Queen's rule of horror.

Figure 3.2 Original Movie Clip

The scene from the movie that I decided to choose was the one in which Alice chases the rabbit without thinking and ends up going down a deep hole that looks like a well. She falls down this hole very slowly for a very long time. She is slowly lowered into the pit when she discovers that the walls of the pit are lined with shelves and cupboards. She removes a jar of marmalade from one of the shelves and places it on the counter.

When Alice follows the Rabbit to the location that he gets her to, she ends up tumbling down the tunnel and the picture that you see above is the sketch that I came up with to depict the scene.

I didn't like for it because it was so straightforward, so I changed the background to have some texture and added some chess moves to the board.

Figure 3.5 Added elements

I had the impression that it did not belong there, so I mulled about the possibility of combining the key hole with another element, such as a silhouette door.

I asked about feedback from Ms. Anis, and she remarked that it is a nice one in response to my question. After that, I inquired of her whether there was anything that I could have done better. In response to my question, she told me, "Perhaps I can come up with a border for the poster to make it appear more streamlined."

As a result, I settled the above one as the subject of my poster. After that, I begin the process of animating my poster in order to create the GIF.

I came up with the idea to animate Alice in the scene where she goes down the rabbit hole and also to animate the shadow to show the glitching effect.

The shadow is cool, but it distracts the viewers a bit from focusing on Alice. So I decided to removed the shadow effect from my GIF.
