Gestalt Theory Exercises

INSTRUCTIONS

We were given the task of selecting two concepts from Gestalt Theory and Imagery and creating one design for each principle we chose. This was the official exercise for this module, and it will be graded accordingly. I was struggling to find inspiration for which principles to use, so I decided to look into all of the principles that are included in Gestalt theory and came across a few that I thought were very interesting. It was the repetition that got to me. I also conducted some visual research on repetition, which I have included in the attachments section below. My fascination with repetition stemmed from the fact that having similar things or shapes in an artwork helps to create a sense of movement inside the piece.

Exercise 1 : Repetition

Idea Exploration

In the process of researching the concepts that I chose, I sketched anything was on my mind to determine whether or not it was what I wanted to build in the end. First, I considered using only the most fundamental forms, such as the square and the triangle, to ensure that I adhered to the idea that I had chosen; I will also include a drawing of what I had in mind below. After working with the forms for a while, I wasn't content with what I was sketching, so I decided to make my work more focused by creating a theme. I wanted my design to convey a sense of playfulness, happiness, and enjoyment. That was the general direction I intended to take things. Consequently, I sketched two different moods of cartioon emojis for my design, which serves as the character for my design, which I would later illustrate digitally.

The reason I chose shapes was that I believed it would be simple for me to come up with a design. However, I wasn't content with what I sketched, and I couldn't envision this as my final product, so I came up with another idea, which will be displayed further down in this section of the website.

I drew four character sketches that were relevant to the subject that I just stated. The character numbers 4 and 3 appeals to me the most because I believe they are the most linked to my topic and also because I believe I can include both of them into my design. Adding one more emotion, such as the number 4, required me to sketch several different feelings, rather than simply depicting one emotion. In addition, I didn't want my design to be boring.

Following the completion of the sketch, I used Adobe Illustrator to digitally illustrate my character. My characters have two different emotions, and there's a cloud in the sky, which allows me to make it more fun and realistic to the idea that I was attempting to achieve.

FINAL DESIGN OUTCOME: REPETITION

Feedback
When I showed my first design, Mr Charles gave me good feedback and complimented my design by saying it's cute and added a nice wallpaper that he could use for his kids. Mr Charles also told me it's a great one and reminded me not to add anything more and keep it as it is already shown in Figure 1.5.

Exercise 2 : Contrast

Figure 1.6 Visual Research on contrast

Idea Exploration

In my research for designs that contrast, I came across a variety of options, but it was the lines that drew my attention, and I knew I needed lines in my own design. I also realised that the only way to achieve contrast is to use colours with varying tones of the same hue. However, I wanted my design to be as simple as possible, so I wanted to use only black and white. I wanted to keep things as simple as possible. That's exactly what I was thinking at the time. I had envisioned something along the lines of a framed image with line art.

I created the design that I had in mind by drawing inspiration from my photograph.

Feedback

Mr Charles provided me with comments, stating that the design that I came up with was very interesting and that he appreciated the effort that I made to emphasise contrast by employing lines and a "reveal" at the end of the design. He also made a suggestion, stating that made to emphasize the contrast with a white background would be appropriate for the image of me.

Feedback

Again, Mr. Charles expressed his appreciation for the work, but he requested that I create another version of myself looking in front of him, as well as to experiment with some other variations, such as repositioning.

Figure 2.2 Contrast 2

I made several adjustments to my design in response to Mr Charles request, including replacing the photo of me looking in front of the camera. Not only that, but I also attempted relocating the frame by resizing it, which didn't work. I really appreciate the one depicted in Figure 2.1 because it clearly depicts the reveal and is exactly what I had imagined my artwork to look like in my mind.

Reflection

Design ideas are definitely exciting to me when it comes to the module structure itself. Due to the fact that we were required to come up with our own original and unique ideas, this assignment/exercise was undoubtedly challenging. We also had the option of selecting our own set of principles to operate from. This very first task provided me with a wealth of information on the principles that I had just learned. Not only that, but I also learned the fundamentals of design and was inspired by a variety of artwork on Pinterest.
