DPI : WEEK 7

LECTURE

Mr. Fauzi discussed colour theory in Week 7 of the course. Color theory, I discovered, is both a science and an art form that involves the use of colour. It explains how humans perceive colour, as well as the messages that colours communicate both artistically and emotionally through their use of colour.

Apart from that, I discovered that there are primary colours, secondary colours, and a full colour wheel on a colour wheel.

RGB v.s CMYK

CMYK consists of magenta, yellow and black and it is the primary colors of printing while RBG colors are used to display on computer screen.

I also learned that RGB colours are an addictive colour mixing model in which the colour is created by mixing with red, green, and blue light sources of varying intensities, whereas CYMK colours are the colours that are created by subtracting light from the RGB colours.

There are a number of ways to create colour harmony:
  • Monochromatic (1 main colour)
  • Analogous (3 main colours, where 1 usually dominates)
  • Complementary (colours opposite the colour wheel)
  • Split-complementary (similar to complementary, but instead of taking 1 colour from the opposite of the colour wheel, take the 2 colours beside it)
  • Triadic (colours that are evenly spaced in the colour wheel)

The Colors are somewhat subjective and some effects have universal meaning.

TUTORIAL

A more advanced exercise than the previous exercise that we completed last week was given to us during our tutorial class. We were instructed to recolor the image and complete it during our tutorial class. Our lecturer provided us with a tutorial video in order for us to learn how to recolor the exercise properly.

PRACTICAL

Since we were given two tasks during the tutorial, the first of which was to use the picture that had already been provided to us, and the second of which was to use the colour palette that had already been provided to us as a reference for us to follow; the second task was for us to choose a picture that we liked from a pool of more than ten options. Once we had selected the image, we were instructed to look for reference photos of hair and skin on the internet to complete the project. To be completely honest, I was expecting to have a difficult time because we had to use a different method to recolor the picture this time, namely the quick selection tool. In addition, we needed to create new layers for each feature of the face that we wanted to highlight with the quick selection tool.

To be honest, once I got the hang of it, it was relatively simple. It really wasn't that difficult. When I was doing this exercise, I found that the technique I learned from watching the tutorial video was extremely beneficial, and I had a great time doing it.
